She Got Her Ears Peeled
September 6th, 2012
After years of waiting and debating, my girlie got her ears pierced over the weekend. In preschool, Miss J decided that she wanted her ears peeled like her pretty friend. In Kindergarten, she still wanted her ears peeled. In these first few weeks of first grade, she has been lobbying non-stop to have her ears pierced. At the mall. At that big girl store. On a girl date. With no stinky brothers.
I gave in, not because she finally found the correct word, but because we think she really is responsible enough to clean them regularly. Miss J was as decisive as always, quickly picking the “March” birthstone earrings of light blue (a June baby who can’t read yet). She sat fearlessly in the chair, and refused to hold the bear because six is way too old for teddy bears. No tears or hand holding for my independent girl. There were many, many peeks in the mirror over the weekend to admire her new look, though. I, too, have fallen in love with the new look of my big girl!

Look-alikes
August 22nd, 2012When I took pictures of my #2 this summer (see them HERE), I was shocked by how much he looked like my sister’s #2. Here is my nephew, in the same outfit, a very handsome look-alike.

Omaha
August 18th, 2012
Our last hurrah this summer in Omaha was jam-packed as always. There is never enough time to fit in all the visits with family and friends. The recap:
*I managed to attend my 20th year high school reunion. Facebook is great for updates on friends, but nothing beats and in-person chat, served with dinner and cocktails. I was so proud of my new shorter, layered ‘do until I saw that my sister got the same exact haircut that week. That’s what name tags are for, right?
* I had kid duty with the cousins (ages 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13) a few days, so we explored the Durham museum and Gene Leahy mall. After a decade away from the Big O, my niece had to lecture me on the importance of waxed paper when visiting the big slides downtown. So, I looked like a complete nutter and bought six butts worth of waxed paper from some random mom.
*I got to catch up with two of my oldest (longevity, not age) friends over dinner. You get instant permission to skip the small talk when you’ve known each other forever (especially when they’ve seen you with extra-thick Strawberry Shortcake glasses and through the big hair years). After a decade away, I still miss being connected to everyone back home!
*LaCasa pizza. Runza fries. Every trip!

1. Reunited with Runza fries 2. Cannon ball for Big B 3. My sister and I (yes, we are twins) 4. Pink faux hawk for soccer tournament 5. Orchid 6. Deserted DFW at 4 am 7. Grilled shrimp 8. Chinese Lantern Festival in STL 9. Cousins playing Sequence 10. Cafe du Monde deliciousness

The Stitches Story
August 10th, 2012I traveled solo with the kids for two 400 mile road trips (15 hours in the car) and survived. There was a pit stop for stitches, however. We headed out from Omaha toward St. Louis, choosing Columbia, Missouri for an easy overnight stop with indoor pool. The kids swam for an hour, and I offered a five minute hot tub break to entice them OUT of the pool and toward our room. Seconds later, E-Man was screaming and bleeding. The hot tub bubble maker thingie sliced between his toes for a nasty cut.
The hotel staff printed out directions to the nearest clinic, and off we went. My man got two stitches in his foot, leaving with a flip-flop on one foot and a home made bootie. We successfully made it to St. Louis the next morning. The end.

Purple
August 4th, 2012My daughter has declared herself an anti-princess: she does not like princess things and will no longer wear pink. Purple, however, is totally acceptable. This session was for her sixth birthday back in June. I love these images, especially the ones with the cape. Because some girls can be superheroes rather than princesses!
